"Brookdale Church is called to bring the beauty of the gospel to the brokenness of life."

 A.   Prayer

If the gospel tells us that it is God who saves us and not we who save ourselves, then prayer must permeate everything we are and do. Prayer is a constant recognition that God must come and do his work if anything is to happen. Therefore, prayer must be the foundation of all the church is and does.

  •  We do not want to be a church that prays; we want to be a praying church.
  •  We do not want prayer to be an exercise or a spiritual discipline; we want prayer to be a way of life.
  •  We do not want to make prayer a part of the church’s strategy; we want to make it the strategy.
  •  We do not want prayer to be a way we get God to do what we want; we want prayer to be a way that we reach beyond ourselves and what we can do, trusting God to do more than we can even ask or imagine.

 B.   Worship

If the gospel tells us that it is God who saves us and not we who save ourselves, then worship must be about God and not about us.

  •  We want to see worship where people are captivated by the glory of God.
  •  We want to see worship where people are moved by the presence of God - through the powerful and sometimes surprising presence of the Holy Spirit and through the means of grace (Scripture, prayer, and the sacraments).
  •  We want to see worship where people are shaped by the rhythm of the gospel.

C.   Spiritual Formation

If the gospel tells us that it is God who saves us and not we who save ourselves, then spiritual formation must not be about us trying harder, but about applying the renewing power of the gospel into every area of our lives and depending on the power of God’s grace and God’s Spirit to transform us.

  •  We want to be a community where people can struggle honestly.
  •  We want to be a community where people can experience grace.
  •  We want to be a community where people can discover how the beauty of the gospel can transform every area of their lives by changing them not merely on the level of behavior modification, but deep down in their heart, character, and affections.

D.   Mission

If the gospel tells us that it is God who saves us and not we who save ourselves, then we must be passionately committed to joining him in his work of saving people and eventually renewing all of creation.

  •  We want to be a community of people that shares the gospel
  •  We want to be a community of people that embraces their vocations as a part of God’s kingdom work in the world.
  •  We want to be a community of people that seeks the ‘shalom’ of the city.
  •  We want to be a community of people that is going to the nations.

All of this must be approached in a posture of faith, for only God can do it.

“God shows up… and stuff happens.”
